How it started
The Booze Calculator grew out of a familiar problem: you're hosting a party, you need to buy alcohol, and nobody can agree on how much to get. You google around, find wildly conflicting advice, do some rough math on a napkin, and hope for the best. Sometimes you run out. Sometimes you're left with a case of warm Merlot nobody wanted.
There had to be a better way — not a rough rule of thumb, but a real planner that accounts for your specific guest count, how long your event runs, what kind of bar you're serving, and what your crowd actually drinks. So we built one.
The Booze Calculator launched in 2024 as a free, no-login, no-nonsense tool for anyone planning an event with a bar. It has been refined ever since based on feedback from hosts, bartenders, caterers, and event planners who use it for everything from backyard cookouts to black-tie weddings.
What makes it different
Most alcohol calculators online are bare-bones sliders that spit out a single number. The Booze Calculator is built around how real events actually work:
- 🎯Per-spirit breakdown. Rather than just "X bottles of liquor," the calculator tells you exactly how many bottles of vodka, bourbon, gin, tequila, rum, and scotch you need — based on adjustable per-spirit ratios you can customize for your crowd.
- 🎉Bar themes that match the occasion. Cinco de Mayo loads tequila-forward ratios. St. Patrick's Day goes heavy on beer. Weddings shift toward wine and champagne. Each theme sets sensible defaults while letting you adjust everything.
- 🍹Complete shopping lists. Beer in cases, wine in bottles, mixers in liters, ice in bags — a full, printable inventory that covers everything you need to walk into a liquor store confident.
- ⚙️Advanced settings for real planners. Adjust non-drinker percentage, buffer stock, drinks per person per hour, and ice per guest. Ideal for caterers, bartenders, and event planners who need precision.
- 🍸Cocktail recipes built in. Each spirit in your shopping list comes with a suggested cocktail recipe — scaled for your guest count, so you know exactly how to use what you bought.
Our approach to responsible use
This tool is strictly for adults 21 and older. We take that seriously. Every page of the site carries a reminder to drink responsibly, designate a sober driver, and look out for guests.
The calculator is designed to help hosts plan thoughtfully — not to encourage over-purchasing or over-serving. The default buffer is set at 10%, not 50%. Quantity estimates are based on industry-standard serving guidelines, and we always encourage hosts to use their judgment for their specific crowd.
